RYU Amiibo Guide

RYU
STRONG TIER

Ryu definitely has potential if you main him or prefer him as a character. But basing off the amiibo's AI, I think you're going to run into a few difficulties when training him. Ryu loves his B Moves and he prioritizes them a little too much. I think because he struggles to land his slower moving tilts, he resorts to B Moves and aerials, which doesn't suit him at all. His aerials are fairly weak and his over-usage of them tend to get him punished a lot. The biggest problem I noticed with him is his obsession with trying to read his opponents into a Down B. It just doesn't work, almost ever, but still insists on using it constantly. On the upside, Ryu has a lot of damage output, his side b is strong because it lingers and can catch them out of shield, and his Up B is a great option for killing and dealing damage. (If he can land it.) I pitted him against multiple tiers of amiibos and the AI's inconsistencies put him behind in a lot of matchups. He didn't do very well to begin with but the more he plays a matchup, the better chances he has of beating them. His recovery is pretty bad, I think it does set him back a bit. I've seen him SD quite a few times because he got knocked out of a jump with no chance to recover from it. Yes he can side b into up b in a lot of cases to gain more ground but I've seen multiple amiibos put him in a position to not recover, which happens a lot in Team/FFA matches. Ryu is very powerful (much like Little Mac), and his recovery isn't quite as bad. But I also think Little Mac is a bit stronger, so that may be the trade off. With enough effort, he could be great. He is an amiibo that will take a little more time to fully develop. I also think he will require a more hands on approach when training.

PROS:
  • Great Damage Output
  • Lots of kill options
  • Lingering Hit Boxes
  • Long/Mid/Short Range Options
  • Great Smash Attacks
  • Side/Up B Really Strong
CONS:
  • Bad AI holds him back
  • Weak in Team/FFA Matches
  • Easily gimpable/Bad Recovery (Compared to others)
  • Can become spammy
  • No Kill Throw
TRAINING MUSTS:
  • This amiibo you want to train to play more defensively, he is too slow to be an aggressor
  • Focus lots of grabs/pummels
  • Train him to kill with all Smash Attacks
  • Use Side B and Up B efficiently, teach him to kill with both at higher percents
  • Neutral B is "okay" at far range, but it's not a priority move, it's very slow moving so it doesn't land often. It does land on occasion though
  • Teach him to kill with aerials but do not use them often
  • Look up his combos, teach him as many as you can do because I believe the amiibo will easily retain the information
  • I've seen him combo off of down tilt but he doesn't do it often, so play around with that option.
  • Jab Combo is good and definitely a good option for this amiibo
  • Focus on tilts, try to get him to prioritize these moves, it's what makes Ryu the character he is
