DR. MARIO Amiibo Guide

DR. MARIO
VERY STRONG TIER

Considering he's basically just a clone of Mario, it's safe to say he's going to be just as strong, if not stronger. This amiibo plays exactly like Mario, he is aggressive, relentless and a terror in a 1v1 situation. The main issue with both Marios seems to be their poor recovery. Being sent flying or getting gimped really lessens the effectiveness of these amiibos and I feel like that's why they needed to be moved down to "Very Strong". Other than that, Dr. Mario is a definite force to be reckoned with. His smashes hit even harder than Mario's and send people flying. Dr. Mario's Up B on Stage has a lot of knock back, unlike his counterpart. He can also kill with back throw but not nearly as early as the other Mario. Dr. Mario's projectile bounces and is a little harder to hit, while Mario's shoots straight forward at all times. So basically it's just small differences between the Marios that have little to no effect on the amiibo's performance, both of them have strengths over the other and I think they are evenly matched. Dr. Mario is very strong in most situations and will give any other amiibo a  tough battle. Well worth getting and training if you like the character. I've noticed since putting more work into this amiibo, Dr. Mario plays a little different than the Mario amiibo. Dr. Mario is more ground oriented while Mario jumps around a lot more with aerials. It's interesting to see them play differently and both equally as effective.

PROS:
  • Easy to train, don't have to be good at Mario to make him great
  • Kill throw
  • Racks Up Damage Fast
  • Very quick and hard to get away from
  • 1v1 terror
  • True Combo
CONS:
  • Terrible recovery
  • Struggles in Team/Free For All matches
  • Likes to abuse Down Smash, be careful
  • May become spammy with Down B if you use it too much or he lands it too much in training
  • Kill Throw isn't as strong as Mario's
TRAINING MUSTS:
  • Focus grabs and pummeling
  • Teach him to kill with his back throw
  • Use Pills at far range and when you are falling back down to the stage.
  • Use Pills to harrass off stage
  • Teach him to kill with all Smash Attacks
  • Do NOT spam Down Smash, he will get stuck in that habit
  • Utilize all aerials
  • Teach him to kill with Forward Air, it kills harder than Mario's (Dr. Mario's Does not Meteor Spike)
  • Use the cape to counter projectiles
  • Also use cape to spin opponent around and Forward Smash, I've seen him do it
  • Down Throw to Up Air is a True Combo at lower percents

  1. "basically it's just small differences between the Marios that have little to no effect on the amiibo's performance, both of them have strengths over the other and I think they are evenly matched." I think Dr.Mario deserves to share the Overpowered throne with his clone. For myself, it's either Mario or Dr. Mario that wins my 12 amiibo tourneys. Both of them are just... Relentless. And if i'm being honest, Dr. Mario tends to win more for me. But either way, he deserves a top spot with his other Mario.

    1. Yea you're right, I think it's about time to move him up. I've put in enough work to decide and I can honestly say they do about the same in tournaments.

  2. "Teach him to kill with Forward Air, it spikes harder than Mario's"

Because Dr. Mario's forward air can totally spike in the first place. Dr. Mario's forward air cannot spike, it sends them flying. No matter how well you place or time Forward air on Dr. Mario you'll find it won't spike like Mario because that's how Dr. Mario was made.

    1. You're right, I didn't mean meteor spike but spike them off the map. Sorry for the confusion, I reworded it.

  3. Can he learn to mash down B? Do Amiibo even learn to mash recoveries?

    1. Some of them are hard coded in, they don't learn to do them, the amiibos with them just naturally know how to do it. Sadly I think this is for recovery only, they wont mash aggressively on stage at all. :/

  4. Actually, I think Meta Knight will mash his tornado. But that's literally the only one I've ever seen mashed on stage. Quite a few will mash to recover though.

  5. Dr. Mario is probably my best amiibo out of all the amiibo I have. Which is weird because he's the only amiibo I have that I haven't trained he hasn't foughten anyone other than amiibos I haven't had him fight the level 9 a.i. I haven't foughten myself and other people haven't foughten him he's only foughten other amiibo and yet he's my best amiibo. Not only does he edge guard extremely well using forward or down air for kills but he's also the only amiibo I have that actually stage spikes other amiibos and he doesn't do this on accident he actually jumps off the stage and will back air other amiibo into the stage if their close enough. He's also the only amiibo I have that actually will do strings and not on accident he actually repetedely does a few different strings for example he does up air strings a lot and he'll try to normally finish them off with a forward air he also mashes his down b to recover which is something I was told the dr. mario amiibo doesn't do. And lastly he adapts extremely well if he's fighting a character he's never foughten before then he plays extremely defensive until he figures out how to beat said character or what things he can punish and then he will continualy punish it until either the other amiibo stops doing it or until dr. mario wins. So I'm wondering if training an amiibo by having them fight only other amiibo is actually the best way to train amiibo
