PALUTENA Amiibo Guide

PALUTENA
AVERAGE TIER

Palutena may be considered one of the weakest characters in the game but in the amiibo world she has a lot of positives that are hard to overlook. Palutena Amiibo's AI plays pretty safe and for her it can definitely work out in her favor. Her smash attacks are very rangey, allowing her to punish without being in a position to get hit easily if she misses. The up smash also has a lot of range and is able to catch opponents that are airborne. I think her biggest strength comes from her lingering hit boxes on many of her moves. All her tilts are hard to air dodge as well as her neutral air, so for amiibos, moves that can't be air dodged easily lead to them being punished a lot more often. She has a kill throw, with her back throw at high percents and also has a true combo that works at low-mid percent with her down throw into a forward air that the amiibo likes to use a lot. So if you look at all of her positives, you will see that she has a lot of options that add up to her being a great amiibo and that is why I think she can be good. However, her slow speed and laggy moves can really get her punished. So a lot of times, even if she gets some good damage off, she's probably missed multiple attacks that got her punished and can't necessarily always keep up with her opponents damage output. I initially thought she was strong because she does have the potential to stand up to great amiibos, but it's not consistent enough to really warrant her as strong. If you train her right, she can "occasionally" rival some of the best amiibos. Do I think she can consistently stomp all of your amiibos? Absolutely Not, she struggles against rush down and pretty much anyone fast enough to shield most of her laggy attacks.

PROS:
  • Rangey smash attacks
  • Lingering hit boxes on lots of her moves
  • A Reflector that she uses pretty well
  • Kill Throw
  • True Combo
  • Good long and mid range options
  • Has a Counter
CONS:
  • On the slower side
  • Misses so many attacks she can get behind in %
  • Has some lag on her abilities
  • Struggles vs rush down/quick opponents
  • Sometimes tries to ledge guard with Neutral B, it doesn't do anything
  • Somewhat difficult to play, so therefore may be hard to train
  • Doesn't use her counter (may be wrong here but mine doesn't use it ever)
TRAINING MUSTS:
  • Teach her to grab and pummel often, this is important
  • Show her how to kill with her back throw at high percent
  • Teach her to down throw into forward air, it's a true combo
  • Utilize all smash attacks and show her how to kill with them
  • Use Reflect, but sparingly
  • Utilize all tilts
  • Utilize all aerials equally
  • Don't jab often, it's kind of weak
  • Utilize her neutral b at range, this is important
  • Show her she can kill with back air and up air
  • Ledge guard with Up Smash, it's pretty good at catching amiibos recovering high
  • Up Tilt lingers and can kill at high percents
  • Utilize her counter, but do it sparingly

  1. Since Palutena is a character with a grab bag of custom moves, do you recommend putting certain custom moves over her original B moves or no?

    1. I personally don't use customs on her and she does great. But at the same time I don't think her b moves are what make her strong. I do like her neutral b for ranged poke and she does use reflect pretty well also. I've never seen her use counter since I didn't train her to use it, I may test it out and see if it's a good option. But her strengths lie more in her Smash Attacks/Tilts/Grab Combo and Aerials so if you wanted to play around with her B Moves, I'm sure it wouldn't put a damper on her effectiveness.

  2. My Palutena doesn't use counters either, nor does she use her Celestial Fireworks
