GANONDORF Amiibo Guide

GANONDORF
VERY STRONG TIER

Ganondorf as an amiibo hits like a truck. In a lot of ways he's similar to Bowser in that he has some fairly fast moving aerials and a command grab. For heavies, these play a big part in them being able to win in 1v1s because of the evasiveness amiibos bring to the table and the ability to basically perfect shield everything. Ganondorf's major weakness lie in his slow moving ground attacks, slow walk speed, and extremly weak recovery. Ganondorf can get ran around by faster amiibos. Some matches he can lose a whole stock before he can even land an attack on them. But on the flip side, Ganondorf can completely turn a game around in one combo. He has one major thing going for him which is his ability to command grab into a down tilt. This combo is almost guaranteed at any percent. I believe he will also down throw into down b at low percents for a true combo on some characters.  His aerials cover a lot of ground, so it's a safe option for him to approach with. Ganondorf isn't really hard to train and he utilizes most of his attacks, but the thing you want to avoid is him spamming his slower attacks like his warlock punch. He puts way too much priority on Up Air because it seems to be his fastest input, and his really laggy moves will get him punished a lot. I think a detriment to this heavy is that Ganondorf doesn't have a reliable kill throw option. But all in all I think he has some definite positives that in most cases outweigh his negatives. He has the strongest amiibo true combo I've seen so far with command grab to down tilt. It works at every percent and can kill. That being said he can struggle in certain match ups and his recovery is god awful. But his strength is immense and his ability to turn a stock around, while having a true combo that can kill, makes him a strong choice. I've seen him be behind by 150%, land a Shield Break on them with 40% and kill them with one Smash Attack. This amiibo is amazing and much like Bowser I think his slow speed makes him struggle in certain matchups which is the only reason I don't picture him as Overpowered. In the equipment feeding world, he is one of the best and well worth your time.

PROS:
  • Insanely Powerful
  • Can turn a match around in one combo
  • True Combos
  • Great Aerials
  • Command Grab to Down Tilt can kill and works at all percents
  • Very Heavy
  • Most of his attacks kill
  • Strong in Team/Free For All Matches
CONS:
  • Very Slow
  • Terrible Recovery
  • Struggles vs faster opponents
  • Struggles to land attacks
  • No kill throw
  • Puts way too much priority on Up Air
TRAINING MUSTS:
  • Utilize all aerials equally. show him he can kill with all of them
  • Utilize his Command Grab but don't overuse it
  • Down Air meteors hard
  • Teach him to Command Grab into Down Tilt at all percents
  • Teach him to Down Throw into Down B at low percents
  • Avoid using Warlock Punch
  • Utilize all tilts, show him he can kill with them
  • Down Smash is probably his best smash because it hits two directions and sometimes they walk into the 2nd part of it
  • Utilize all smashes and show him he can kill with them
  • All B skill are worth teaching aside from Neutral B, show him he can kill with these
  • And as always, use grabs and pummel them

  1. you realize you can't teach amiibo combos, right? they only read a move table, you can make it more likely for them to use certain moves in a row, simulating a combo, but they will never make the connection between the two.

    1. True Combos they will do, chain combos they will not.

  2. I've trained my Ganondorf amiibo twice now and he still faces a major problem. He spams short Hop -> up air to much and it usually as no effect, if not a negative one. Unfortunately, there are times when he wins like this and the attack comes out so fast that I can't punish him for it. Do you have any experience with this? And if so, do you have a solution?

    1. Yes! I have struggled with this in the past. I know that when he is doing that, it's because his opponents are too quick for him and that's the fastest move for him to combat against it. It really does ruin him when he gets into that funk, but the good thing about amiibos is that they are adaptable. If you place him against another amiibo that can punish him relentlessly for doing that (My go-to is usually Mario) it will force him to look for other options. As long as that strategy is working for him, he will keep doing it. (This is a big problem with Pikachu and why he's extremely difficult to train, because his Thunder spam is hard to dodge sometimes and he lands it so often that the amiibo thinks it's his best option for doing damage.) Ganondorf needs to be punished for using this manuever or just not land them at all before he will stop spamming it. If that is his main source of doing the most damage, he will use it more than anything else. Hope that helps! Sorry for the delayed response! :/
